Why Most People Get This Wrong

Most preppers who attempt seed saving make critical errors that render their entire effort useless. Here is where they go wrong:

Wet-Processed Seeds (Fermentation Method)

  1. Squeeze seeds and gel into a glass jar. Add an equal amount of water. Label with variety and date.
  2. Ferment at room temperature for 2–3 days. Stir once daily. You will see mold forming on the surface — this is correct. The fermentation process destroys seed-borne pathogens and breaks down the germination-inhibiting coating.
  3. Rinse thoroughly. Pour off the mold and floating seeds (those are nonviable). Dump viable seeds into a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water for 60 seconds.
  4. Dry completely. Spread on a ceramic plate for 7–14 days. Stir daily to prevent clumping. Do not use heat to speed this process — it kills the embryo.

  • Maintain isolation distances religiously. Corn requires 1,000 feet of isolation or staggered planting dates of 14 days. Squash family requires 500 feet or hand pollination with tape-covered blossoms. Peppers need 300–500 feet. Know your crops.
  • Build a three-year rolling seed supply. Save enough seed each year to plant for three consecutive years. This protects against one bad growing season or storage failure.
  • Conduct annual germination tests. Place 10 seeds on a damp paper towel, fold, seal in a plastic bag, and leave at room temperature for the crop's standard germination period. Count how many sprout. Below 70% germination means your seed stock needs refreshing.
