How to Waterproof Your Bug Out Bag Contents (Before the Rain Does It for You)

A soaked bug out bag isn't an inconvenience — it's a potential death sentence. Wet fire-starting gear won't ignite. Soaked maps turn to mush. Waterlogged first aid supplies breed bacteria. Drenched clothing accelerates hypothermia, which can kill you in under two hours in the right conditions. Most preppers spend hundreds of hours curating their BOB contents and then shove everything into a single nylon bag with zero waterproofing strategy. One creek crossing, one surprise downpour, or one capsized raft later, they're dead in the water — literally. This isn't about comfort. This is about operational readiness. Your gear needs to work when you pull it out, not after you spend forty-five minutes trying to dry it out over a fire you can't start because your matches are wet.
Understanding the Waterproofing Problem
Before you start stuffing things into dry bags, you need to understand what you're actually defending against. Water gets into a bug out bag in three distinct ways, and each one requires a different defense.
- Direct immersion: Crossing water, flooding, or the bag falling into a body of water. This is the worst-case scenario and requires the most aggressive protection.

- Category B — Should stay dry but can tolerate brief moisture: Clothing, food (if not properly sealed), paracord, and tools with wood handles.
- Category C — Tolerates moisture well: Metal tools, most cookware, tarps, and cordage.
Once categorized, protect Category A items individually. Use heavy-duty zip-lock bags — specifically the Ziploc freezer bags in 1-quart and 1-gallon sizes — as a first line of defense. Common Mistakes That Will Ruin Your Gear

- Using cheap, thin zip-lock sandwich bags. Sandwich bags are not waterproof under sustained pressure or submerged conditions. Use freezer-grade bags only — they're thicker and seal more reliably. - Packing wet or damp gear after use. If you've been out in the rain and pack wet gear back into dry bags, you've trapped moisture inside.
