The Fundamentals — Compass Use and Declination Step by Step

Step 1: Understand Your Compass Components

A quality baseplate compass (the standard for land navigation) has these key parts you must know cold:

  • Baseplate — the clear rectangular body with ruler edges (typically scaled in 1:24,000 and 1:50,000 for USGS topo maps)
  • Rotating bezel (azimuth ring) — the outer ring marked 0°–360° in 2° increments on most quality models

Step 2: Find Your Declination

  2. Rotate the bezel until the orienting lines inside the bezel are parallel to the map's north-south grid lines, with the orienting arrow pointing toward the top (north) of the map.
  3. Read the bearing at the index line (where the bezel meets the direction of travel arrow). Note the number.
  4. Pick up the map. Hold the compass level in front of you. Rotate your body until the red needle sits inside the orienting arrow ("putting red Fred in the shed").
  5. Look up from the compass along the direction of travel arrow. Pick a landmark — a tree, a ridge, a rock — that lies on that exact line. Walk to it. Repeat.

Step 6: Apply Declination Manually (if your compass isn't adjustable)

Use the memory phrase: "East is least, West is best."

  • East declination: Subtract the declination from your compass reading to get true bearing (compass reads high, subtract to correct).
  • West declination: Add the declination to your compass reading to get true bearing (compass reads low, add to correct).

Once you've mastered basic bearing work, these techniques will significantly improve your accuracy and speed under stress.

Triangulation for Position Fixing

If you're not sure where you are on the map, triangulate:

  1. Identify two or three visible landmarks you can also find on your map — a peak, a tower, a distinct ridgeline.
  2. Shoot a bearing to each landmark from your position.
  3. Convert each bearing to a back-bearing (add or subtract 180°).
  4. Draw a line from each landmark on the map along the back-bearing direction.
  5. Where the lines intersect is your position. Three lines giving a small triangle (called a "cocked hat") is normal — your position is inside that triangle.

Aiming Off

When navigating to a feature on a linear landmark (like a water source on a river), intentionally aim 5°–10° to one side. When you hit the river, you'll know which direction to walk to find your target. Without this, you'll reach the river and not know which way to turn.

Attack Points and Handrails

  • Handrail: Use a linear terrain feature (trail, ridge, stream, road) that runs parallel to your route. Navigate to it and follow it — faster and more accurate than constant bearing work.
  • Attack point: Navigate to an obvious, easy-to-find feature near your destination, then use careful compass and pace work for the final approach. Removes long-range bearing error.

Night Navigation

In darkness, your landmark-to-landmark technique becomes harder. Use a compass with a luminous bezel (most quality compasses have this). Rely more heavily on pace count and terrain association. Slow down — moving fast at night with a compass is how people walk off cliffs.

Terrain Association

The compass confirms what you read on the ground. Study your topo map before moving and build a mental image of what the terrain should look like: "I should descend into a draw, cross a stream, then climb to a saddle at roughly 400 meters bearing 045°." If reality doesn't match the mental model, stop, verify your position before continuing.
