The standard FEMA recommendation of a 3-day food supply is an insult to serious preppers. And the generic "2,000 calories a day" number plastered on every food label? That's a sedentary office worker's maintenance number — not a human being chopping wood, hauling water, standing watch, and managing acute stress around the clock.   • A reliable scale: Know your current body weight in pounds or kilograms. A basic digital bathroom scale works. In the field, a small luggage scale can serve double duty weighing packs and food.
  • A notebook and pen: Digital tools are great until they're not. Keep a physical log of your calculations in your go-bag or prep binder. A Rite in the Rain waterproof notebook is ideal.
  • A calorie reference guide: Print and laminate a calorie-dense food chart. USDA's FoodData Central is the gold standard online, but a laminated pocket guide stored in your bag works when the internet is gone. Alternatively, the book Bushcraft 101 by Dave Canterbury includes useful nutritional reference points.
  • A basic understanding of the three macronutrients: Protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Fat yields 9 calories per gram. Protein and carbohydrates each yield 4 calories per gram. This is the math behind everything.
  • An honest activity assessment: You need to know what your survival scenario actually looks like physically. Sitting in a bunker is very different from a 15-mile daily bug-out on foot with a 50-pound pack.

The Process: Calculating Your Actual Survival Calories Step by Step

Follow these steps in order. Don't skip ahead. Each one builds on the last.

  1. Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). This is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest — just to keep your organs running. Use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict formula.

    For men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) + 5
    For women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) − 161

    Example: A 35-year-old male, 180 lbs (82 kg), 5'10" (178 cm) has a BMR of approximately 1,882 calories per day. That's the floor. That's what he burns doing absolutely nothing.
  2. Apply an activity multiplier. In survival, you are almost never sedentary. Use these multipliers against your BMR:Using our example: that same man doing heavy physical labor needs approximately 3,576 calories per day — nearly double what the food label told him. Plan accordingly.
    • Light activity (minimal movement, sheltering in place): BMR × 1.4
    • Moderate activity (camp chores, light patrolling, short hikes): BMR × 1.6
    • Heavy activity (long-distance foot travel, physical labor, construction): BMR × 1.9
    • Extreme activity (sustained bug-out, combat load carrying, logging, digging): BMR × 2.2 or higher
  3. Add a stress and environment buffer. Acute psychological stress, cold weather, and illness all increase caloric demand significantly. Cold environments can increase your caloric needs by 25–50% above your activity-adjusted number because your body burns fuel to maintain core temperature. Add a minimum 10% buffer for stress. Add 25% if temperatures drop below freezing. This is not optional math — this is survival margin.
  4. Determine your minimum viable intake. This is the threshold below which you begin losing functional capacity rapidly. For most adults, that number sits around 1,200–1,500 calories per day for short-term survival. Below this, cognitive function, immune response, and physical strength degrade within days. Know this number for every person in your group. Children, pregnant women, elderly individuals, and people with health conditions will have different floors.
  5. Map your food storage to actual calorie content — not volume. Pull every item from your storage and calculate its caloric density per pound or per serving. Prioritize calorie-dense foods: white rice (1,600 cal/lb), pinto beans (1,550 cal/lb), rolled oats (1,700 cal/lb), hard red wheat (1,500 cal/lb), coconut oil (3,900 cal/lb), pemmican (approximately 3,000+ cal/lb), and honey (1,380 cal/lb). Know these numbers cold.
  6. Calculate your supply duration. Total stored calories ÷ daily caloric need = days of supply. If your group of four adults needs 12,000 calories per day under moderate activity and you have 360,000 stored calories, you have 30 days. Not a year. Not six months. Thirty days.   • Fat is your best friend in a calorie crisis. Gram for gram, fat carries more than twice the caloric payload of carbs or protein. A single pound of coconut oil stored in a sealed jar provides nearly a full day's calories for an average adult at maintenance.

  • Altitude is a wildcard. At elevations above 8,000 feet, appetite suppression intensifies and metabolic rate increases. If your bug-out plan takes you into mountain terrain, add 15–25% to your caloric budget per person per day.
  • Track your real burn before you need to. Do weekend camping trips with a calorie log. Wear your full bug-out load on a 10-mile hike and track what you actually ate versus how you felt. This real-world calibration is worth more than any formula.
  • Rotate your stock with intention. Use a FIFO (first in, first out) system and actively cook from your storage regularly. You'll learn the actual caloric and satiety value of your stored foods far better from cooking them than from reading a label.

Prioritize cooking oils, hard grains, dried legumes, canned fatty fish, and freeze-dried protein.   • Days 13–18: Do a 72-hour food rationing drill. Live on 1,800 calories per day for three days while maintaining your normal physical output.
