  1. Choose your site. Look for natural windbreaks — a large fallen log, a rock face, a dense stand of conifers. Avoid low ground, dry riverbeds, and anywhere directly under large dead branches (widow makers). Ideally, find two trees 7 to 9 feet apart that you can use as anchor points for your ridge pole. The ground should be as flat as possible and free of rocks and roots.
  2. Find your ridge pole. You need a straight, sturdy branch or sapling at least 7 to 9 feet long and 3 to 4 inches in diameter at the thickest point. This is load-bearing.
