A lean-to is a single-pitched, open-faced shelter — think of it as a slanted roof with a back wall. It does three critical things: blocks wind, sheds rain, and reflects heat back toward you if you build a fire in front of it. It is not a fully enclosed structure, which means it won't trap warmth as effectively as a debris hut, but it goes up fast and requires no lashing materials, no cutting tools, and no pre-cut lumber.
The core structure consists of three elements:
- The ridgepole: A horizontal support beam, ideally 8–10 feet long and at least 3 inches in diameter, rested between two forked trees or propped on Y-shaped uprights.

- Choose your site carefully. Look for two trees standing 7–9 feet apart with natural forks at roughly 5–6 feet high. Your back should face the wind. Avoid low ground where cold air and water collect. Never build under dead trees or widow-makers.
- Set your ridgepole. Find a straight, strong branch 8–10 feet long. Rest it across the two natural forks. If no forks exist, construct Y-shaped uprights by jamming thick forked branches 18 inches deep into the ground — stomp them in with your boot heel. The ridgepole should sit at about chest height (roughly 4.5–5 feet off the ground).
- Lay your rafters. Collect 15–20 branches, each 6–8 feet long and at least 1.5 inches thick. Lean them against the ridgepole at a 45-degree angle, spacing them about 12 inches apart. They should reach from the ridgepole all the way to the ground. Press the bottom ends into the soil slightly so they don't kick out.

Common Mistakes That Will Get You Killed
- Building too big. A lean-to that's too wide or too tall is a heat sink. Keep your interior width to about 6 feet. You want just enough room to lie down and turn over — nothing more.
- Skimping on thatching. Most people put on half the debris they actually need. If you can see light through your roof, rain is getting through and heat is escaping. Double what you think is enough.
