  • Cleanest sources: Bathtub and shower rinse water, bathroom sink water, washing machine rinse cycles. These are your primary targets.

The laundry-to-landscape (L2L) system is the best starting point. No surge tank required, low cost, and you can install it in a weekend. Here's how to build one for under $150.

  1. Gather materials: 1-inch diameter flexible PVC tubing (50–100 feet depending on your layout), a 3-way diverter valve, a mesh filter sock, zip ties, wood stakes, and mulch.
  2. Install the diverter valve: Cut into your washing machine's existing drain hose and install a 3-way diverter valve. This lets you switch between the gray water system and your standard drain — critical for when you're washing with bleach or heavy detergents that would harm plants.
  3. Run the main line: Use 1-inch diameter flex PVC from the valve outlet. Route it along the exterior of the house and out to your irrigation zone. Keep the line sloped downhill at a minimum 2% grade — that's roughly a 1-inch drop for every 4 feet of horizontal run.
  4. Install outlet emitters: Punch 1/2-inch holes in the tubing every 18 to 24 inches in the zone you want irrigated. Cover each outlet with a 3-inch deep mulch basin to prevent surface pooling.
  5. Attach the filter sock: At the start of the line, wrap the mesh filter sock around the intake point to catch lint. Clean or replace it monthly.

  • No diverter valve: Without one, you'll eventually dump a bleach load straight onto your fruit trees. One mistake can damage soil biology for months.
  • Undersized tubing: Using 1/2-inch tubing causes backpressure and overflow. Stick to 1-inch minimum for laundry systems.
  • Ignoring surge volume: A single wash cycle dumps 15 to 25 gallons in under 3 minutes. If your line can't handle that flow rate, it backs up. Design your emitter zone wide enough to absorb it fast.
  • No mulch basins: Surface pooling of gray water is a health hazard and a code violation in most jurisdictions. Always direct water subsurface into a 3 to 4-inch mulch layer minimum.
  • Forgetting seasonal management: In freezing climates, drain your lines before winter or the whole system cracks. Install a low-point drain plug when you build it.
