  5. Inspect the spark plug. Remove it with a spark plug wrench, check the electrode for fouling or excessive gap. A healthy plug is tan or light gray at the electrode. Black and sooty means rich mixture. White means lean. Gap should typically be 0.020"–0.025" — verify against your owner's manual.
  6. Clean the cooling fins and air intake screen. Compressed air or a stiff brush clears sawdust from the cooling fins on the cylinder. A clogged intake screen causes overheating.
