  5. Create a sleeping platform: Raise your sleeping area six to twelve inches above the entrance tunnel level. This is critical. Cold air sinks. You sleep above the cold pool.
  6. Ventilation hole: Poke a hole the diameter of your fist through the top of the dome. This prevents carbon dioxide buildup and reduces condensation. Mark it outside with a ski pole or branch so rescuers and you can find it.

The Snow Trench: Fast, Crude, and Life-Saving

When you don't have time, don't have deep enough snow for a quinzhee, or are working in degraded physical condition, the snow trench is your emergency answer. It can be constructed in under thirty minutes and will still cut wind exposure to near zero.

  1. Dig your trench: Cut a trench just wide enough to fit your body with slight clearance — roughly two feet wide — and as deep as possible, ideally three feet. Length should accommodate your full height plus six inches.
